That would work for me. I still believe this would be bloat in the
source code, since the same behaviour can be achieved in 2 lines of
shell; but at least I could disable it at compile-time.

My point was that there is no totally reliable way of making it work in
all cases, and that careful design and thinking is required to add such a
seemingly small and innocuous behaviour.
