thanks - neither do I and I certainly had no knowledge or intention of
running it - nevertheless here it is yakking at me :-(

so something is invoking it behind my back I guess...

So let me be clear - are these true statements - 

"avahi is not getting onto the machine as part of the busybox install"
"nothing in busybox would invoke avahi"

I need to have a look at the original buildroot, and the init files I've
inherited !!!
