Actually we didn't move on because of age. We moved on because we needed
better cross-platform support (gcc 2.95 sucked on non-x86 platforms), c99 is
a seven year old standard that allows us to _reduce_ our dependence on gcc
specifically, the newer optimizer actually produces smaller code when you
beat it with a large enough rock, and the Linux kernel already moved on ahead
of us so we weren't the ones imposing new requirements on the community.

It wasn't just a question of "old".

P.S. The linux kernel still says Make 3.79.1 in the Documentation/Changes for
2.6.16. Saying that our problem space is harder than the kernel's problem
space strikes me as kinda silly.
