I hate it when something clicks right as the cancel button goes away...

The hard links option is in 
Busybox Settings -> Installation Options -> Applet links -> {hard,soft}-links.

'make install' will install Busybox in the location configured in that screen too.  It will also create all the links for you, automagically.
