Insmod and modprobe have a history of being a bit twitchy.  I thought this had 
all been ironed out, but apparently not.

Just for grins, if you could try -current (the 1.1 development line) and build 
just the insmod stuff and see if that works for you.  If it does, we can 
backport the differences for 1.0.2.
