[PATCH] The low-hanging fruit (multiple patches)

Most of the issues are to do with the applets' main code and not the
changes I made to them, it seems - hence the ? option and so on.
Still, I'll see if I can clean them up a bit more; you can never be
blameless ;)

Point taken on 1 << 0 - I did that for clarity, but I suppose it's
clear enough anyway for anyone with a brain cell or two...
