[BusyBox] any reason why telnetd rejects and vanishes?

under a new 2.6 kernel-based build, i'm testing various parts of my
embedded system that worked just fine under 2.4 (busybox 1.00 in both
cases).

part of the boot of the embedded system is to start telnetd, which
starts just fine as it always has. however, the instant i try to
telnet to the embedded system, i get a connection and *immediate* drop
from the system, at which telnetd is no longer running.

this has always worked before. is there something about BB's
telnetd related to a 2.6 kernel that would cause this? or maybe some
simpler explanation? pinging both ways works fine, nothing else seems
amiss.
