[BusyBox] Module autoloading in a busybox/uClibc environment

Howdy folks,
I'm having some difficulty getting kernel modules to autoload as I
expect (busybox cvs + uClibc cvs as of this weekend). For example:
~ # vconfig add eth0.200 200
WARNING: Could not open /proc/net/vlan/config. Maybe you need to
load the 8021q module,
or maybe you are not using PROCFS??
On my RedHat 9 system (and on other "full" distributions), this would
correctly load the 8021q kernel module. Similarly, the following also
fails:
~ # iptables -t nat -nL
iptables v1.2.9: can't initialize iptables table `nat': Table does not
exist (do you need to insmod?)
Again, the behavior I expect is for the necessary modules to be loaded
automatically.
I'm running module-init-tools 3.0pre9. 'modprobe' run manually from the
command line works just fine:
~ # lsmod
Module Size Used by
~ # modprobe iptable_nat
ip_tables: (C) 2000-2002 Netfilter core team
ip_conntrack version 2.1 (5120 buckets, 40960 max) - 296 bytes per
conntrack
~ # lsmod
Module Size Used by
iptable_nat 20516 0
ip_conntrack 29856 1 iptable_nat
ip_tables 17680 1 iptable_nat
And /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe contains '/sbin/modprobe'. All the
kernel modules are available (that's why they load just fine manually),
and modules.dep is current. I'm not sure where else to look, so I'd
appreciate any pointers. Thanks!
