[BusyBox] one more IPKG-related question

sorry if this is wandering a bit far afield from BB-related stuff, but based
on what others have said, i'm going to give iPKG a try on my PPC-based
system. all i need at this point is the recipe for building a PPC-based
executable.
i checked out iPKG from cvs.handhelds.org, and the source directory is
sitting on my RH fedora system. since it's from CVS, there's no [Cc]onfigure
script, but there is "autoconfigure.sh".
i have a directory full of cross-compile utilities in /usr/local/ppc860-linux,
all the commands i need like powerpc-linux-{gcc,ld,as,...}. so being new to
this, how do i cross-compile to get a PPC-based iPKG executable that i can
add to my ramdisk image along with busybox? (i googled for a pre-built
PPC-based ipkg, but didn't seem to find one.)
like i said, i'm new at this. any pointers to general HOWTOs and tutorials
gratefully accepted.

p.s. it just occurred to me that to get an initial ipkg running on this board,
i should be asking:
1) can i build the initial executable statically, just to avoid any lib problems at
the moment?
2) is that single ipkg executable all i need to get rolling (along with creating an
/etc/ipkg.conf file)?
