[BusyBox] compiling busybox with static binary

i'm hoping someone out there can help me out.

i'm trying to install busybox (latest stable version) on Mandrake 9.0.

if i leave DOSTATIC set to false, the program compiles just fine when i do a
'make'.

if i change DOSTATIC to true, the program seems to compile almost all the
way and then dumps:

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lc
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [busybox] error 1

i have searched the net and can not seem to find anything that would help me
figure this out.

the only other changes i make from the defaults are that i uncomment:

//#define BB_INSMOD
//#define BB_PIVOT_ROOT

but i changed this for both ways of DOSTATIC and it did not effect the
outcome.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
