[BusyBox] insmod SegFaults?

I'm not sure if this is the fault of busybox, but I'm not sure what
else it could be. insmod <anything> segfaults. I tried two different
machines, same result. I tried running gdb on it, and as soon as
"insmod <anything>" was told to run it segfaulted - COMPLETELY.
gdb stopped with a segfault (!).
In all cases, these programs were running under Oxygen (based on
LRP 2.9.7) with Linux kernel 2.2.18 and glibc 2.0.7 (most recent).
Other programs in the busybox suite seem to work....
I'm baffled as to why gdb would fail with "insmod <anything>" -
shouldn't it catch the segfault and do debugging?
The version of busybox is the a copy of 0.49pre just before it was
released (last Friday?).
