At least part of your problem comes from overriding
CFLAGS on your make command line.  AFAIK, the easiest
"fix" is to put your extra CFLAGS settings inside the
Makefile, as in
CFLAGS += -O3 -march=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer

If you have other weird make problems, you should be aware
of an internationalization issue in 0.48 (fixed in CVS).
The fix is to change the line in busybox.sh that looks like
     | tr '[:upper:]' '[:lower:]' | sort
to
     | tr A-Z a-z | sort
