You example is unclear.

Do you mean something like this?

myfunc() { local VAR="$(false)" || { echo FAIL; }; echo DONE; }; myfunc

It does not print FAIL in bash either.


This does:

myfunc() { VAR="$(false)" || { echo FAIL; }; echo DONE; }; myfunc

I tested ash and hush and both match bash.
