backport pread/pwrite fix for 0.9.33 branch?

Hi,

git-1.7.11 broke badly and I traced it to this:

I wonder if it might be an idea to (properly) backport the fix for 0.9.33.

I have a hackish patch here which seems to fix the issue for x86 atleast:
