[uClibc] uclibc Toolchain Fails to Build linuxppc-2.4

I'm in the process of moving from a crosstool toolchain to a uclibc
toolchain. This is failing to build the current linuxppc-2.4 kernel because
of a problem very similar to
http://sources.redhat.com/ml/binutils/2003-09/msg00381.html.

This would suggest a later binutils is needed. I'm happy to forward port the
current uclibc binutils patches - but has anybody already done it? Or have I
misunderstood the problem?
