Thanks for the tip! That solved the problem.
If you want to compile an i386 kernel (I've tried a 2.4.20 one) with
the root_fs environment you definitely need the bin86 package
(available at http://www.cix.co.uk/~mayday/ ) and the gnu gzip
( ftp://wuarchive.wustl.edu/mirrors/gnu/gzip/ ). The one provided by
busybox doesn't do the job!

Could anyone try to compile the portmapper just to make sure, that
there are no broken things and I made the mistake?
