[uClibc]buildroot: mipsel getty on serial port

I have a board that has two serial ports, one I use for the console
(ttyS1) the other I use for kgdb (ttyS0). There is no video on the
board, so my only option for login prompt is ttyS1. I would like to
run a getty on the serial port, and I noticed the following line in
buildroot's inittab:
# Put a getty on the serial port
#ttyS0::respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS0 115200 vt100
I tried uncommenting this and changing it to ttyS1, but I still don't
get a prompt.
During boot, I have a startup script run 'mount' and 'ps' so that I
know the kernel and busybox are working. But after that script is
done I see no more output on the console.
Any suggestions?
Dave
