I'd add:
Building a toolchain is a royal PITA. Expect problems.
You must be careful hacking Makefiles. Expect problems.
Contaminating your build environment is possible. Expect problems.
A contaminated build environment can lead to confusion, further
comtamination, and additional hairloss.
For that reason, you should work in a chroot environment that
you don't care if you screw up and have to start over.
Expect problems, plan for them. Expect to bleed.
