passwd default change from md5 to des?

Looks like commit 12a432715f066cf9d677316a39c9e0ebc6d72404 from May 2011
changed the created passwords to be DES by default (over the previous
default of MD5). This was not mentioned in the commit message.

Why the move to the more insecure option?


To make this obvious to the users, could there be a config option for
the default passwd hash method?
