Imagine you have a 10 gig mbox file. You delete a few 4kb emails.
How this space is going to be reclaimed?
With maildir, it's a trivial problem.

Locking over NFS is problematic.
Maildir does not need any locking whatsoever,
it only needs atomic renames IIRC.
