[I forgot to include the list before, so this is a copy just to the
list]
After downloading 140MB of (the current!:-) source (of the binary I
was using) -- (http://cdn.adslzone.net/pub/repos/victek/Tomato/Tomato_RAF_1.25.8515.2_Source_Code.tar.bz2
)
I did find the .config file. Sure enough, it contains:
CONFIG_TAR=y
CONFIG_FEATURE_TAR_CREATE=y
# CONFIG_FEATURE_TAR_AUTODETECT is not set
# CONFIG_FEATURE_TAR_FROM is not set
# CONFIG_FEATURE_TAR_OLDGNU_COMPATIBILITY is not set
CONFIG_FEATURE_TAR_OLDSUN_COMPATIBILITY=y
CONFIG_FEATURE_TAR_GNU_EXTENSIONS=y
# CONFIG_FEATURE_TAR_LONG_OPTIONS is not set
# CONFIG_FEATURE_TAR_UNAME_GNAME is not set

Thanks! That would appear to be it. For some reason, the author of
that particular config decided to make those changes. I will invite
the coders of the various Tomato variants to fix their configs.
It appears ironic that Snow Leopard, "The World's most advanced OS",
has switched to the POSIX tar format, which according to BusyBox
terminology requires "OLDGNU_COMPATIBILITY".

Thanks. I understand now.
