Useful payload for ping?

I have a situation where I need to transfer a small amount of data over
unreliable networks. The data consists of GPS coordinates and a time
stamp, something that would easily fit into a normal ping packet.

I know this is somewhat off-topic for the busybox list, but I'm hoping
someone here could perhaps shed some light on this. I control both ends
of the connection.

This is from a mobile source, so the connection may not last long enough
to establish a normal TCP connection, but pings can get through.

Anyone have any suggestions? (Including, perhaps, a better list to ask?)
