It might be a side effect of not having enabled much else to speed up
the build:

Currently defined functions:
        bbconfig, chattr, cttyhack, fdflush, fdformat, findfs, flash_lock,
        flash_unlock, flashcp, fsck, halt, hush, init, ionice, linuxrc, lsattr,
        mesg, poweroff, reboot, sh

Maybe if I had enabled tftp and wget which also use the progress meter,
then it would not matter tat much.
