clean/distclean speedup

I was actually pondering merging the various "find" instances earlier today.

I don't see a problem using xargs, it's susv3 and we supply a working version 
of it.  (I have a rule of thumb that we should work without our own stuff.)  
I'll test it on RH9 in a bit to make sure there's no brain damage there, but 
for now:
