I'm guessing your Debian /etc/mtab is a file, not a symlink to /proc/mounts.
Do "cat /proc/mounts" and "cat /etc/mtab".
If we unload this task on the kernel (which we have to do for things like
shared subtree to work properly), then we have to accept what the kernel
gives us. Bug the kernel guys if they're doing it wrong. :)
