Bourne shell does not mean bash. Bash is a highly bloated, extended
implementation of the standard Bourne shell, which does not even quite
comply with the standard. In practice ash will probably do everything
you want. The other shells available in BB are very limited and not
POSIX Bourne shell compliant whatsoever, but might work ok on very
minimal systems.

No but there is a plan to replace all the shells with a much-improved
bbsh which will be both smaller and more complete than the existing
ones.
