tar and the semantics of "filenames"

yes. I agree, but I cannot think of anything right now. I thought mkdir
and stat/lstat could be potensial things that could break but it seems
like it does not.

The only way is to test?

I am preparing some patches here to display the uname and gname instead
of uid and gid, when those are available.
