It looks like it provides for some scripting capability on pre/post link up,
so no, it is not completely redundant.  I'm sure there are people relying on
it too, so we can't toss it.  Probably just need to massage/integrate it a
bit better.

I need to look at the code, but reading the man page would suggest to me
that ifupdown should be dependant on ifconfig, and not affect the ip
applet.  I'll have to peruse that tonight a bit.
