I've seen this several times on mixed machines and it usually comes down 
to needing to be root (user not part of the cdrom device's group?) or 
the drive just doesn't play nice with the drivers (in general). Also 
unlike the original eject, this applet does not unmount the cdrom before 
ejecting it, so ejects will fail unless you umount it first. Admittedly 
I should have included this in the first place...
