I'm remembering looking at the gcc source code for the first time around 1992, 
and being unable to follow it due to nested #ifdefs for things like obsolete 
hewlett packard minicomputers (a whole forest of them just for slightly cray 
variants)...

Won't have time to really look over the patch until tomorrow, though.

What are "embedded targets of the non-kernel variety"?  What, they run DOS?  
Are there more references on this, and are we sure that once this non-linux 
platform starts being supported and thus exercised, the changes for it won't 
become more invasive as they find more and more stuff they need us to change?
