Yup.  Boot into new firmware without turning the system into a brick if it 
doesn't work.  If it boots up and is happy, it can change the default 
permanently.  Otherwise you power cycle and the old firmware comes up.

A) I fail to see the relevance, sorry.

B) Syslinux only works from fat, not ext3.  And it doesn't even work with 
fat32, just fat-12 and fat-16.
