I don't know for sure but the bash manpage says, under "DEFINITIONS":
> name A word consisting only of alphanumeric characters and under‐
> scores, and beginning with an alphabetic character or an under‐
> score. Also referred to as an identifier.
and then it defines the function declaration syntax under "Shell
Function Definitions" as
> [ function ] name () compound-command [redirection]
so from that I would infer that only alphanumerics and underscores are
allowed under bash and I would expect that to be inherited from POSIX sh
or somewhere similar.
