[BusyBox] does tar not extract arguments recursively?

If the tarball was made with -o, --old-archive, then you need to do

[*]     Enable support for old tar header format

I can think of no good reason why -o should be used, the option should
be disabled in GNU tar for tarball creation.

If that doesnt help you you might have to send me the tarball or a link
to it.
