Thomas,

The first thing you want to check is your `/etc/inittab` file.
Make sure that it is starting your shell or login program on tty1, or
vc/1 if you're using devfs. This is most likely the source of your
problem.

Subject: [BusyBox] sh: can't access tty, job control turned off

I am new to linux, but I have managed to create my own version using
busybox 0.60.5 and uclibc 0.9.19 with kernel version 2.4.19. Right
after boot, everything seems to work fine. But if I do dmesg or a lot
of directory changes I get the message "sh: can't access tty, job
control turned off." From the uClibc website, I found the statement:

"Job control is turned off since you cannot get a controlling
terminal on /dev/console. The kernel will not allow it. Run
your shell on a normal tty such as ttyS0 or tty1 and you will be
fine. Or you can hack your kernel if you are into that sortof
thing."

I don't remember setting anything when I compiled this system that had
to do with the console, and being new to this, I don't know how to
follow the directions above. Can anyone hold my hand and walk me
through this?

Tom
