# ./busybox dd of=/tmp/st0 if=/dev/st0 bs=5120
34+0 records in
34+0 records out

No problem. If I then try
# ./busybox cpio -itv < /tmp/st0
It lists the archive fine.

still won't touch the DAT drive though.
