If the system you *build* the ramdisk image on uses a kernel with
version number between 2.4.10 and 2.4.17 inclusive, you may be 
creating a corrupted ramdisk.  This kernel bug was fixed in
2.4.18 pre something...  

That might not be your problem, but it's a possibility...
