IMO it's a misconception that patches exist only to save bandwidth.
Patches give another benefit that is often much more important, namely
version control.
If you are applying a patch to a file that has changed since the time when
the patch was created you get an error (provided that the patch covers the
changed piece of code). Patch means "replace old code with new code". If
the old code has changed there could be reasons for you to examine your
changes instead of wiping out others' work.
This may not apply to the current situation, but it's a good idea to get
rid of misconceptions and learn responsible version management.
