[BusyBox] dd doesn't close stdout?

I was recently doing thus:

Oxygen-sys1# dd if=/dev/fd0u1680 | nc otherhost 1885

...and...

otherhost# nc -l -p 1885 > disk.ima

...

Doing thus, it appeared to be necessary to "break" (with ^C) out of 
the nc (netcat 1.1) command.

Is this because dd isn't closing the stdout?  Or is it soemthing else?
