[BusyBox] Kernel panic

I compiled Linux 2.2.17 with these patches:
    linuxrc-always
    initrd-archive
    openwall
    linux 2.2.18 :-)
    ip_masq_vpn

I originally used the EigerStein kernel config file, but added
modules for amateur radio and a few other things. I've been using a
2.2.17 for some time with these patches installed and from this
config file. I configured 2.2.18 the same way, but with general SCSI
support, SCSI/IDE emulation, and framebuffer support. The system
boots just fine, shifts into graphics mode, displays the startup
logo, unarchives the root filesystem, and THEN.....

I'm not sure if this is the fault of busybox, linux 2.2.18, or
patches. Personally, I don't think the patches are a problem; I'm
not sure about busybox or linux; my suspicion is that busybox is
incompatible with 2.2.18 somehow.

Whatever the reason, it would be nice to solve this....
