[BusyBox] tar and bazillions of "exclude" files

I know this has come up before....

I've heard that tar in busybox has small limit on the number of files
it can "exclude", which is why every LRP-based system uses ctar to
compress files, because these systems rely on this feature. They
have a LOT of files to exclude (I seem to remember a count of 50+).

Is there any hope for a change to tar to support LOTS of exclude
files?
